Tsetsegmaa: A Remarkable Encounter in the Western Taiga
Tsetsegmaa, an elderly member of the Tsaatan community, underwent open-heart surgery two years ago, an exceptional case within our project. Hailing from the remote Western Taiga, Tsetsegmaa belongs to the Tsaatan people, an indigenous group of nomadic reindeer herders in Northern Mongolia and Russian Siberia.
Tsetsegmaa's exceptional curiosity and her ability to connect with people quickly became evident. Even while recovering from her surgery, she took the time to get to know every person in the surgery department. During our visit to the Western Taiga in autumn 2023, she made an effort to engage with every member of the crew, displaying her warm and welcoming nature.
The Tsaatan people, also known as the Dukha, have managed to preserve their tribe's unity and centuries-old traditions in the Taiga. Their unique way of life, characterized by an unbroken connection with their reindeer, has garnered international attention in recent years.
Approximately 500 Tsaatan people lead a nomadic existence, constantly on the move in search of essential resources for survival. Their reindeer serve as integral members of their community, providing food, milk, tools crafted from antlers, and transportation. Astonishingly, these reindeer are entirely domesticated and accustomed to human interaction.
